It’s that time of year again when you need to trim your hedges. Trimming is not something that people do very often and therefore not something we put much thought into. Usually to trim a hedge the average user simply takes out a pair of garden scissors and starts trimming with the end result that they have taken a few inches off their hedge and spend a good few days doing it.
The problem comes when you live in the UK and have large hedges that were grown many years ago. Using scissors is simply not an option as it would take too long and therefore this is where powered hedge trimmers are used that make light work of even the most difficult hedge.
Types Of Hedge Trimmers
For the average user that is going to trim their hedge once maybe twice per year, they don’t need professional equipment and therefore buying a trimmer that has specifically been designed to help you trim your hedges does not have to be an expensive process, however there are generally a few things that you need to be aware of with firstly the type of trimmer that your buying.
Petrol Powered – Typically these have powerful petrol powered motors that offer fantastic performance, however they are often more hassle that their worth. We reviewed the best lawn mowers recently and our favourite was an electric version simply because they don’t break down very often. Hedge trimmer are very similar meaning that if you’re going to buy a petrol unit, then make sure that you use it at least once a month otherwise you will have a hell of a job starting it after it has been sat in your garage for a year.
Electric Powered – Yes you have to plug these in, however with the flexibility that they provide and the fact that you don’t have to service or use them on a regular basis (our electric hedge trimmer has sat in a shed for a good year before and we have never had any problems starting it again) means that for your average home job you would do better to buy a decent electric model.
Cordless – This means that they are battery powered. A few years ago we would not have recommended one of these, however with the increase in technology, cordless is a real possibility and offers both flexibility to take your machine where you want it to go. The only problem – when the battery runs out!!
Long Reach – This type of trimmer means that you can be standing on the ground and still reach those branches at the top of your hedge. The downside is that they do not offer the control or flexibility and often we have found they are much heavier to use meaning that your arm get a real work out.

Which Trimmer Is Right For You?
The biggest problem with me recommending a hedge trimmer to you as that we’re all different and what I think are the key points to consider when buying the best hedge trimmer might not be the same with you, however unless you plan on using your trimmer in a professional capacity then I am sure that you just need think about the options that you have to easily choose what’s right for your needs;
How Many Times Per Year Will You Use It – This is an important question to ask yourself and one that many users don’t. If you leave anything that runs on Petrol along for a long period of time, it’s will not start up easily. If like us, you’re only planning on using your trimmer once or twice per year then buy an electric trimmer and save yourself the problems of starting you petrol unit.
What Type Of Hedge Will You Cut – If your planning to only cut down Leyland Cypress, Leylandi or Conifer Hedging that we typically have a lot of in the UK then you will have no problems with an electric trimmer, however if you have thick beech or pine bushes then you may want to think about petrol powered as these will have more power to cut through the thick branches.
Where Are You Hedges – If you hedges are close to your home, then an electric powered trimmer and an electric extension cord will be fine, however if you’re planning on cutting down hedges that are no where near a electric source, then you will need to think about cordless if they are not too strong or petrol power if they are thick branches.
How Strong Are You? – Silly question I know, but one that is actually very important. We don’t like extension trimmers as they are hard to handle and even though they only weight a couple of kilos, you try and stand will that above your head for ten minutes. It’s really difficult. Petrol and Cordless units will typically be much heavier that electric powered trimmers as they either have a battery to lug around or an engine.
Price Range – Price is always an important factor to consider and whilst we would always recommend that you buy a quality brand named product, a bad petrol powered trimmer is no better than a top of the range electric trimmer.
Other Factors To Consider
Blade Length – Longer does not mean better, however look for something around 20-25 inches long for a quality product
Weight – You will have to hold this above your head therefore no more than four kilos if you want to do this comfortable.
Cordless – If you’re buying cordless, look for one hour battery life as a minimum.
Cable Length – Minimum of 20 Feet in length
Safety Features – Button Stop, meaning that if you release the button, it stops.
Warranty – Very important that your product has a minimum of a one year warranty.
