Are you in the market for a new electric lawnmower? In this section we’re looking at the best electric lawn mower's on the market today and making a decision on which you should be buying to use at home and and more importantly, which you should avoid.
If you have any type of lawn at home, you’re going to need to buy yourself a lawn mower to ensure that your lawn is kept in the best possible condition.
The biggest question that I face from user's is typically on the design and model of lawnmower that they should be buying given that there are hundreds of different brands, models, designs and price ranges on the market. How do you choose what is right for you and more importantly how do you choose which is the best model for your needs.
Electric Lawn Mowers
First point to make, in this section we're only looking at electric lawn mowers as these are most commonly found in small and medium sized homes where the average user needs to mow less 500 square meters of garden space. This is about the limit for electric lawn mowers and whilst there are a few that will mow a slightly larger area, if you're garden is bigger then you will probably have the space and more importantly, find it easier to use a petrol lawn mower given the benefits that they come with.
If this is you, then check out our Petrol Lawn Mower review here where we look at some of great push and ride on lawnmowers . If you're looking for an electric lawnmower you need to decide which is the best type of lawn mower for your needs given that there are typically two key designs that you need to be aware of.
Best Electric Lawn Mower
If you don't want to read the whole review, check out our favourite model the Black & Decker CLM3820L2-GB 36V 2.0Ah Lawn Mower which performed fantastically during test's and more important is part of the new breed of cordless lawn-mowers meaning that you don't have any wires to run over or keep an eye on when you're trying to mow your lawn. It's a brilliant lawn-mower and one that you know will not let you down, however it's not the cheapest on the market, but this is the price you pay for quality.
What Makes The Best Electric Lawn Mower
Before we get into the best electric lawn mower, there are few things that we need to look at that will help you decide what's right for you. Firstly, there is the type of lawn mower, typically there are two different designs being Cylinder and Rotary Mowers with the key difference being that cylinder mowers are likely to be better for smaller gardens and rotary mowers are likely to be better for larger gardens and more force from a petrol engine.
Rotary Mowers – are very good for smaller gardens and allow you to easily collect all the grass into a collection unit at the back of the mower. This type of unit works by using a set of rotating blades under the mower which when turned at speed, simply cut the grass to the selected length.
Cylinder Mower – are very good for larger gardens where there is the need of a petrol motor where there is longer grass and typically contains a larger proportion of weeds. This type of mowers work by using a turning blade at the front of the unit which means that as the mower is pushed over the grass, the blades rotate cutting the grass which is then swept backwards into the grass collector at the back of the mower.
Electric Vs. Petrol Motor
Electric Lawnmowers are fantastic for small areas and for grass that is not very long. The key advantage of an electric motor is that it’s light, easy to use and requires very little maintenance, however you will need to stick the power cord into a electric socket and therefore if you’re trying to cut a large area of grass you end up using multiple electric extension cords just to reach those hard to get areas.
Petrol Lawnmowers offer users fantastic performance and flexibility to take your lawn mower all around your garden, but they do require maintenance, and a fuel to ensure that they start correctly. We have had lots of fun over the years trying to start the dam motor when it’s been left for a couple of month over the winter.
Key Factor To Look Out For
Design – The key part of the design is really whether the lawnmower powers itself forwards or whether you need to push it to get it to move. Usually you can adjust the speed meaning that if you’re slowing down then you can easily reduce the speed of the mower.
Engine Size – this is very important as it will be the deciding factor on whether your lawnmower will be able to power through your lawn or whether it’s going to get bogged down the whole time because it does no have enough power to cut the grass. If you want to use a petrol engine, then make sure that you have at least 150cc, whilst an electric engine needs to be at least 1,000Watts.
“Movement Lever” meaning that the blades do not spin and the mower does not move forwards without this lever being pressed. This is a key feature that you must look out for especially if you’re going to cut grass as you will often find that the lawn mower gets clogged up meaning that you need to stick your hands into the blades to free any loose grass.
Cutting Width – This is the maximum width that the lawnmower can cut. During out test’s we found that you should be looking at buying a lawnmower with a width around 21 inches as this will drastically help you to reduce the amount of time it takes to cut a lawn, whilst at the same time meaning that you can still get your lawnmower through the doors of a standard green house.
Cutting Height – This does really depend on the type of lawn that you’re cutting meaning that if you’re wanting to cut a field of long grass, then it’s probably not the best advice, however if you want to cut a normal lawn and keep it maintained, then make sure that your mower can cut grass from 5 inches all the way down to 1 inch.
Best Corded Electric Lawn Mower
We love the Black and Decker Cordless Lawn Mower, however I do understand that it's not for everyone. As a result, if you're looking for a cheap corded lawnmower then check out the Flymo Hover LawnMower. It's cheap and will do a fantastic job, however it does come with a few drawbacks.
The Flymo Hover comes with a 10 meter cable that should allow you to reach every end of your small garden. If you need more than 10 meters, probably you should be buying yourself a petrol lawnmower, however and extension lead could solve this problem. The Flymo comes with a 1150 Watt electric engine attached to a 33 cm metal blade which can accommodate four cutting heights ranging from 10 to 30 mm. It's light at 6kgs and is really all you need, however the key drawback, it doesn't pick up the cut grass. Check it out in action here.
